The Holiness of Rest

I remember the first alarm clock I got as a kid. The clicking of the literal turn of time could be heard through the night. 

 

One minute. Click. 3 a.m. Click. 

 

As I reflect on it now, I was measuring my sleep without even knowing it. Far more sophisticated devices now can easily measure the quality of our sleep, not merely its length. Frankly, though, the real measure of the quality of my sleep shows up throughout my day. 

 

I don’t need a device to let me know that I am mentally disengaging in a meeting, dismissive of a colleague, too quick (or slow) in a decision, deaf to the words of my wife. These are all impacted by my sleep. But more importantly, they are determined by my rest. I can get a great night’s sleep and still lack rest.

 

Rest shows up in the Bible more quickly than does sleep

 

The end of the creation narrative reveals a God at rest (Gen. 2:3). The Hebrew word shabbat, at its core, means “to cease.” God’s activity of creating caused no fatigue, no increased heart rate, no heavy breathing. Yet, on the seventh day, He rested. 

 

Nuance exists in this usage of shabbat. Sabbath rest involves ceasing, reflecting, and celebrating the goodness of that which has preceded it. God stops the work to celebrate its goodness. 

 

The writer even goes so far as to say that God made shabbat holy. So, get this: The first “thing” God declared holy in Scripture isn’t a thing at all. Time. Our treatment of rest as holy then makes our living within all time as holy for rest properly orients us to the God who is pervasively and persistently being God. 

 

Rest disabuses us of our addictive need to control time, violently coercing its contours to meet our demands. Scrolling through social media feeds, racking up likes, trading intimacy for mere familiarity, knowing for knowing about.

 

Perhaps as we enter a new year, we might consider an increase in our rest as an invitation into that which is holy. 

 

Recently, on Sundays, I have begun a tech Sabbath in which I turn notifications off on my phone, check no e-mail, scroll no feeds. I put my phone away. The holiness of the space becomes palpable in its ordinariness as I begin to feel and enjoy my humanness, what I have been created to be. Nature’s colors caress and the whispering sounds of the Garden seduce. And the God who walks in the cool of the evenings invites me to journey with Him into all of life.

Jesus - Echo, Signpost, Redeemer
I’ve always loved Christmas. Growing up in the snowy prairies of Canada, this was a time of endless outdoor fun. Our tradition celebrated well.  Food, extended family, ice skating while celebrating the majestic and mysterious story of Jesus, Immanuel, God with us – the All Creating One becoming 100% human and pitching his tent on this planet next to our own.     The wonder surrounding this event should never get old. But what was less talked about, was how this idea of God dwelling with his people was not a singular event. It sits squarely in the center of God’s Big Story but also serves as an echo and a foreshadowing – all to highlight God’s unwavering commitment to his world.   THE ECHO   God's desire to walk alongside his people was nothing new. Long before the nativity scene, his feet had strolled through a garden, his voice had been heard in conversation with humans, his presence had been enjoyed by all living things.    In the very early days of his Story, it was a love story that began in a garden. The Creator set in motion a rhythm of intimacy and shalom (wholeness, peace, goodness, fruitfulness - everything as it should be). God and his people would work in intimacy and unison. Together they would shape a flourishing world for the good of all creation and the glory of His name.   This had always been the plan - humanity working in harmony with their Creator, bearing his image and cultivating his world.     The coming of Jesus marked a new beginning, an echo of what had been lost, an opportunity for redemption.   THE SIGNPOST   Jesus’ coming also foreshadowed a coming reality. "Look,” John cries out. “God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God."    At the end of this chapter in history, God is coming down to earth and will restore his original intent – to make his permanent and divine home with his people. A time where everything will once again be reconciled to its rightful place, and God's people will rule and reign with him forever.   THE REDEEMER   The coming of Jesus - his life, death, and resurrection, is the final statement on God's faithfulness to his creatures and his world. He will not leave us alone, he insists on uniting himself with his people. He insists on redeeming the whole world back to himself. And he invites us into that Big Story to be renewed ourselves and to begin the work of reconciling all things back to him.    As Rich Villodas says, "The good news of advent is not that we are faithful in our waiting (we often aren’t) but that God is faithful in his coming."     This Christmas season, let’s press into this truth that God never stops pursuing us; this was his plan from the very beginning. He meets us right where we are, and he’s relentless about making his dwelling with us.    If we believe this to be true, then how should this relentless love Story shape how we live next to our neighbors, our colleagues, and our family members?     By Jonathan Thiessen  Scatter Global President and Co-Founder

Recovering the Dignity and Mission of Work
“What do you do?”   This is a common question asked whenever meeting someone new. It's one we all answer differently based on our day- to-day activities.    One might answer, “I’m a student," “I work in such- and-such industry,” or “I’m the mother of four children.” (She might rightly respond that she does four full-time jobs!)    No matter our season of life or the scope of our responsibilities, we all work for a common company. As followers of Christ, we are all in the family business. What does one do in the family business? Each one manages a metron.     A metron is a measure of responsibility delegated by God to you, in the midst of creation, culture and spiritual history. The Apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 10:13 that, “We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere [metron] which God appointed us...”    In the same way, we too, find ourselves with a delegated sphere of responsibility in the Kingdom of God. And without this fundamental concept in place, we struggle to find purpose.    Have you ever asked yourself the following questions:  Why in the world am I here? Why am I doing this mundane job? Is my ‘work’ getting in the way of doing something spiritually significant?    If this sounds familiar, then you’re not alone. But I would suggest that no work is outside the family business and all work matters to the owner (God).   In other words, no work is without kingdom purpose. All work either advances or hinders the aims of the business; no work is without eternal consequence. Therefore, each of us is called to live on mission and to advance the footprint of God’s business.    So, if you want to recover the dignity and mission of your vocation, start by applying these metrics to your work and your metron will never be the same: Am I bringing order out of chaos? Do people experience God's presence when they are in my presence? Do I value this project as if it was precious to the Father? Is the wisdom of God made known through the solutions I bring to my vocation? Does the culture in my metron reflect the culture of heaven?   God has given you permission and a co-mission to work.
